The Studio – Open for business

Harton Hedge-outdoor painting-streetscapes-Philippa Robert-Adelaide South Australia

Open for business again! Yes, it has been a workplace, but we have had only a few visitors over the past few months.
And I think you know what that means. Stuff has built up. Surfaces – well, where are they? Buried or smothered. Dust has collected in the corners.
Now the TO-DO list has become TA-DA! Lots of crossing out with a flourish of the pen. And here’s why….

Open Studio

Once again I am teaming up with my daughter Jane White to bring you lots of gift ideas at very reasonable prices. You will find plenty of variety, with tiny landscape paintings, stone and string jewellery, calendars, candles and cards on display.

Outdoor paintings

The little landscapes I will be showing are all from outdoor excursions, some of which took place in the United Kingdom earlier this year. Here is a peek at one.

We invite you to drop in for a browse and a chat. Check out the facebook page for the address. Otherwise you can send me a message via my contact page. This is a busy time of year already, but if you can make it Jane and I would be delighted to welcome you. The weather should be cooler by the weekend too.

November Open Studio – preparing for Christmas!

November Open Studio. Have you heard about it?

Your answer is probably “yes” if you have been around this patch during the last few weeks. You can guess I am excited about inviting you in again! The gates will open over the last weekend of this month, 26th and 27th November 2016, 1-5pm both days.

The last Open Studio was back in August and lasted for a month of Sundays (and Saturdays). This time the opens will be just two in a row on a single weekend. So you will need to be quick!

This time my special guest will be Jane. She will be presenting a beautiful array of her handmade jewellery and soy candles. Jane creates her pieces mostly from natural materials. They include art for your home as well as wearable items.

Along with books, calendars and cards we think we have solved all your gift problems!

And did I mention the wave paintings? They will be there in a range of sizes at massive discounts.

The weather forecast for this weekend promises warmth in the mid-20s, but being Spring, there may be some wind. That will affect how much we can use the outdoor area for easels, but you never know! The element of surprise adds to the excitement, hopefully not the panic.

Wave paintings

Wave paintings are generally among my largest works.

During the Open Studio August weekends, while the studio wall was covered with small and mostly outdoor paintings, many visitors asked about larger works.

Their curiosity has been my inspiration!

I am planning another Open Studio towards the end of November.
And this time I will feature wave paintings.

Here’s one I prepared earlier. It has a happy home!

I am really happy to bring these out into the light as they reflect my love of the sea in a different way. The movement and power, the pattern and fluidity all fascinate me, as well as the colour and the light.

These paintings tend towards the abstract, which pleases me. How about you?

Weekends with SALA

SALA Open Studio 2016 – and unveiling a new apron!

Weekends with SALA? It makes for a change. The Festival is up and running, so it is time for an update from this corner.

The first two Open Studio weekends were a great success and the weather during three of the four sessions was bright and sunny.

A lot of visitors looked in. Some were old friends and some were new. Many stopped to talk and the afternoons were interesting. A few people were painters (one even had some house painting waiting at home). All were art lovers, enjoying the weather and the small art shows in Adelaide’s suburbs.

The essential refreshments

A family group arrived while I was painting outside. They had seen my flyer in Copenhagen, the local ice cream shop. I should have guessed! There was quite a bit of evidence on the jumper of young Miss A.

Many people had come via the SALA Guide (Thanks SALA)! And one had come on recommendation from her sister in France. How exciting is that? I am stretching the story a bit there as the sister in France is a school friend and her visiting sister is also a friend. It was a wonderful reunion.

The second weekend wasn’t as sunny, but there were almost as many visitors.

Painting demonstrations

It was difficult to continue painting when visitors arrived, so the notion of demonstrations was perhaps a bit ambitious. However, there was work going on. With such an unusually tidy studio I felt the need to paint to show my authenticity. Does that sound a bit odd?

Because of the small size of this space it has to be cleared to fit a few people in. Things are against the walls and masses of clobber is hidden in the adjoining room! I dread bringing it all back in, but that will be my chance for a spring clear-out.

SALA tulips (draft)

With a grey day on the second Saturday I started an indoor painting (some tulips in bud) and on Sunday when skies were brighter I took the easel outside again to put the finishing touches to the previous weekend’s beach scene. Although the large gates were open I chose to paint the outlook over the small gate as it made a strong frame for the composition.

Weekends with SALA continue!

There are two more weekends with SALA. The weather bureau has forecast showers for this one, so I am not sure what lies ahead for my painting. Perhaps another still life or at least completion of the tulips, buds or not.
